Het Fries Museum included a loose sketch by J. Gardenier in an exhibition on Rembrandt’s paintings. Here's me trying to discover that technique.

Tip for Photographing your work:

Remember that shadows cast on your paper ruin the optical illusion you are trying to create. This is also why you really shouldn't draw on paper with lines.

Slow down, don't skip steps. Get it right and speed will come with time

Make up your own exercises that show you directly where you make mistakes

20180521 perspective | articles sketchbook

Books on learning perspective:

Perspective Made Easy by Ernest Ralph Norling. Scott robertson's how to draw (of course). Another favorite is The Theory and Practice of Perspective, by George Adolphus Storey. It's difficult to follow, but you'll find this book goes way more in depth than the more modern sources do. Artists in 1910 did not have 3d animation software to solve their problems, this book is full diagrams showing how to plot perspective by hand.

Software tricks that help you figure out the perspective your image is in.

Draw plants ~ A tiny mistake here or there? That's not so bad. Portraits are more difficult, we all know what a face should look like and because of this, it's easy to see where you got the proportions wrong. With these complex abstract things it's not so noticeable where your drawing is off.

Things are 3d but paper is flat.

Try to get your drawing to read as if it's an actual thing in 3d space. Remember to find the big shapes first and then use contour lines to show how they sit in 3d space.

20170714 Belgium Plaster Cast | articles

Afgietselwerkplaats, Museum of Art and History Brussels.

From the blog of James Gurney:

Most art schools once had large plaster cast collections, but many destroyed them in the wanton orgy of iconoclasm of the 1950s, 60s and 70s. The cast collection belonging to Vassar College in New York State (seen intact above) was a typical sad story. The director of the Art program, Agnes Clafin, ordered the destruction of the collection in the 1940s arguing that casts were no longer useful in teaching, and that “this was a time to innovate, to bring Vassar up to speed.” Only a few casts at Vassar escaped annihilation.

‘Dome group’ was the name of our student team in the last school project I’ve worked on. We built 3d content that was projected in a dome.

At Gameship our group wanted to transport exhibition visitors to Frysland using 3d animation and use the installation to take pictures. These pictures were used transport people (the pictures) back in the 3d scenes.

Zebragat

One of the first school projects I’ve worked on. I’d like to keep this as the start of my blog.  Our group worked on a video campaign for VVN (Veilig Verkeer Nederland), built a mobile game to support the film and thought out creative concepts. We wanted to show young drivers how they can be more responsible in traffic and used multimedia to tell our story.

Eyjafjallajökull

Another school project; we built an animation that showed the highlights of this school, so that both parents and students could recognize the building on their first visit. I built a model of the gym area and worked on animating the scene.

First website

I built my first website when I was about nine years old and haven't stopped playing with computers since.
