Het Fries Museum included a loose sketch by J. Gardenier in an exhibition on Rembrandt’s paintings. Here's me trying to discover that technique.

You can get blurry backgrounds with pinholes too. It's not bokeh exactly, you average out the movement in a long exposure.

is creating the illusion of 3d objects on a flat 2d plane, like a piece of paper. On his youtube channel: Mark Chong has interesting ideas on; How to learn to draw, how to design exercises for yourself and how you develop a feeling for 3d space.
Tip for Photographing your work:
Remember that shadows cast on your paper ruin the optical illusion you are trying to create. This is also why you really shouldn't draw on paper with lines.
Slow down, don't skip steps. Get it right and speed will come with time
Make up your own exercises that show you directly where you make mistakes
201807 lines 2 | articles

Avoid chicken scratch
You yourself know the correct line is in there somewhere but your audience does not. Make a bold statement, don't scribble.

Marks made with a pen are permanent, they will show you your mistakes
Ghosting
- place begin/end dots for every line you draw.
- Judge where you will go.
- 'ghost', practice making your line. (in one direction)

Books on learning perspective:
Perspective Made Easy by Ernest Ralph Norling. Scott robertson's how to draw (of course). Another favorite is The Theory and Practice of Perspective, by George Adolphus Storey. It's difficult to follow, but you'll find this book goes way more in depth than the more modern sources do. Artists in 1910 did not have 3d animation software to solve their problems, this book is full diagrams showing how to plot perspective by hand.

Draw plants ~ A tiny mistake here or there? That's not so bad. Portraits are more difficult, we all know what a face should look like and because of this, it's easy to see where you got the proportions wrong. With these complex abstract things it's not so noticeable where your drawing is off.
Things are 3d but paper is flat.
Try to get your drawing to read as if it's an actual thing in 3d space. Remember to find the big shapes first and then use contour lines to show how they sit in 3d space.

201712 renewed interest | sketchbook articles
I've discovered a new interest in drawing, from the beginning:
How to hold the pencil, How to sharpen.
Improvised drawing easel
There are creative alternatives if you don't have an easel to work at. Tape your drawing to a large closet or door, the wall if you want. I've been using a drawing board: clip your paper to a wooden board and lean it against your desk.
The dexterity exercises from Peter Han's dynamic sketching, but done standing. Tiring! simple things like point to point / warming up becomes difficult again.
Drawing standing up allows for a greater range of motion. Draw from your whole arm, not just your wrist, this gives you more freedom to work and it'll be easier to get large flowing lines.

After some time away from studies, getting back on track is going to be a bit tricky.

20170714 Belgium Plaster Cast | articles
From the blog of James Gurney:
Most art schools once had large plaster cast collections, but many destroyed them in the wanton orgy of iconoclasm of the 1950s, 60s and 70s. The cast collection belonging to Vassar College in New York State (seen intact above) was a typical sad story. The director of the Art program, Agnes Clafin, ordered the destruction of the collection in the 1940s arguing that casts were no longer useful in teaching, and that “this was a time to innovate, to bring Vassar up to speed.” Only a few casts at Vassar escaped annihilation.

First try at drawing with the Neo Lucida.
I tried it in three ways: drawing an old camera, sketching on location in the museum, and tracing photos on the computer.
So both from a real object and a photo.
The prism is just a bit too small to be truly useful. An interesting experiment, but I haven't used it again after these tests.

The proportions vary in all four drawings, even though I traced them from the laptop. The Lucida is probably not meant to be used with a screen. It's difficult to keep it parallel to the prism.
